šŸ”„Russia Obtains Pandora's Box

The Pentagon and Musk race to contain Starlink pandemonium....

Good Morning. Rough weather in Iowa caused wind turbines to tumble, The New York Times reported. Experts were noted to have called out the damages as being an unusual event, if only because wind turbines are built with the sole purpose of functioning in good, gale gusting.

Other than wind turbines, Iowa has faced down devastation as the result of the catastrophic wind storm. My thoughts go with them.

Pentagon and SpaceX Collaborate Against Russian Misuse of Starlinkā€¦

The Pentagon is working with SpaceX to disable Starlink internet terminals that have been illegally acquired by Russian forces. The cooperation aims to prevent these terminals from being used in occupied areas of Ukraine, which poses a significant threat to Ukrainian military operations.

Ongoing Challenge

Despite efforts to identify and deactivate the terminals, the challenge persists as Russia continues to obtain new units through black market channels. This collaboration highlights the strategic importance of Starlinkā€™s satellite internet in modern warfare and cybersecurity.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY & DIPLOMACY

Counterterrorism

  • China is forcefully moving Tibetan villagers and herders from rural areas to cities under the pretext of poverty alleviation. This relocation program, despite being labeled as voluntary, has coerced many Tibetans into compliance through threats and coercive measures.

  • The 16th meeting of the India-UK Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism was held to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in combating terrorism. Both nations focused on sharing intelligence, strengthening security measures, and addressing emerging threats to global security.

  • A multi-agency investigation in Scotland, led by Police Scotland and supported by the National Crime Agency, has uncovered preparations for a potential terrorist attack in Edinburgh. The operation, named Operation Ferulic, involved specialized units but did not disclose the investigation's outcomes or any arrests.

Military & Defense

  • Lockheed Martin collaborated with the Defense Department to conduct a test where a PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement destroyed its target utilizing a virtualized Aegis Weapon System for the first time at White Sands Missile Range in 2024.

  • Recent Pentagon accusations claim that Russia launched a satellite capable of attacking other satellites, raising concerns as it shares an orbit with a US government satellite. Despite the denial from Russian officials, the potential threat to space militarization is alarming and against international treaties.

  • China initiated military exercises around Taiwan involving navy vessels and aircraft, amid rising tensions. The drills coincide with the inauguration of Taiwan's new president and signal China's continued claim on the island, following also on the heels of a recent massive street protest to Parliament reforms that mirrored the Sunflower Movement.

Cybersecurity

Counterintelligence & Espionage

  • Jack Teixeira, who shared highly sensitive U.S. documents online, faces up to 17 years in prison after pleading guilty. The leak included details on U.S. concerns regarding Ukraine's military capability.

  • A group of environmental activists in Iran, detained since 2018 on espionage charges, have been released. Their imprisonment, which included torture and the suspicious death of Kavous Seyed-Emami, sparked international outrage and highlighted the dangers faced by environmental defenders in the region.

  • SpaceX has successfully launched its first batch of new spy satellites for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). This mission, part of a series of classified launches, aims to enhance the United States' surveillance capabilities.

Transnational Organized Crime

  • The Thai government, with Australian support, has opened a new training facility in Bangkok to fight human trafficking. This milestone marks a significant step in their joint efforts against this global issue.

  • Families of victims killed by the Juarez cartel in Mexico are filing numerous court claims to collect $4.6 billion awarded in a 2022 civil judgment. Lawyers for the families have submitted over 1,200 claims against assets seized from the cartel, aiming to leverage the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act for compensation.

  • Mexican drug cartels are reportedly active in all 50 U.S. states, according to law enforcement officials. These cartels are involved in extensive drug trafficking operations, distributing methamphetamine, fentanyl, and other illicit substances across the country.

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Summit opened in Los Angeles on May 22, showcasing this yearā€™s local color focus on the groundbreaking advancements in generative AI. The event, attended by startups and leading figures in the AI and data sectors, featured a range of innovative solutions where generative AI had a common thematic presence.

Commanding Drones With Software

A standout presentation involved a game where a DJI drone was controlled via generative AI commands. The demonstration showcased how communication via typed commands to a hardware interface allows the player to experiment with the interface engineered within the scenario of using DJI Technologies SDK.

Redefining ā€˜Remoteā€™ Control

The software, instructors present at the event told Burn After Reading, uses an intricate interface made up of different levels of communication between the drone and a natural language model. In simplified terms, this communication interface uses software tools, including Falcon 7Bn and an API made with Python, to execute communication and empower the command interface.

The interface can be operated with simple keyboard and mouse click prompts, rather than using the handheld controller. The game simulates guiding the drone through complex building inspection commands remotely without touching a handheld controller.

Instructors explained that the model doesnā€™t need to have a ā€œhugeā€ generative AI model like Open AIā€™s GPT 4o. It can be run locally.
